Sam Adams Octoberfest
Written by Noel
Octoberfest. The name itself conjures up images of heavyset, lederhosen-clad German men clanking overflowing steins and joining in rousing polka numbers. Busty fräuleins serve beer by the gallon. Bratwurst and sauerkraut are piled high, steaming on oversized platters. And days roll on in seemingly endless merriment. So…what could a thoroughly American craft brewery possibly know about the Octoberfest brewing tradition?
Apparently, quite a lot. Since 1989, Samuel Adams has proudly brewed its own Marzen style beer as an autumnal season release. And although it’s hard to dislike most any Octoberfest brews…boy, did brewmaster and founder Jim Koch hit a home run with this one. From the first pour, the golden amber lager pays homage to the season. Heavily malted, with very distinct caramel and toffee notes, its smell might deceive a newbie into thinking they’re in for a sugary treat. I mean, who doesn’t like a good Skor or Heath bar? But what really knocks this beer out of the park is its balance…not too sweet, not too bitter. A perfect blend of hops and malt with an incredibly toasty aftertaste. Who knew a lager could have so much potential?! Oh right…the Germans.
Next time October rolls around, you’ll most likely find yourself in some familiar places: raking leaves on a brisk fall morning, sitting around a campfire toasting s’mores, or waiting for the ring of the doorbell to signal the next round of trick-or-treating toddlers. So do yourself a favor. Pour a Sam Adams Octoberfest or two and make the mundane memorable again. Just don’t forget to thank Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria.
